G-13

Lineage: Afghani Indica

G-13 is currently classified as an Afghani indica strain. It was grown in 1970’s for a US government research program (g = government + 13) and for indoor commercial production. In Mississippi in 1976, Robert Randall was arrested for possession/cultivation of Marijuana. Afflicted with Glaucoma, Randall fought the case and sued the government back by stating that it is medically necessary due to his disease and has the right to self medicate. Randall won his case and filed a petition to provide him with FDA-approved access to government supplies of medical marijuana becoming the first American to receive marijuana for the treatment. He was one of 30 people that received between 4-9 ounces a month from a government pharmacy. Sandy Weinstein ran a secret lab at University of Mississippi where they supposedly assembled a world class collection of strains and bred many super hybrids from the Afghani cutting and G-13 was born. In 1992, George H. W. Bush put a stop on all new enrollments concluding there is no scientific value during his “get tough on drugs” days. 13 patients were allowed to be grandfathered in, and 4 are still alive as of 2012 and still receiving meds. Urban legends about this strains origin exist that involve the FBI or CIA collecting strains from around the world (ok, sure) or grabbing Michael Hallman’s stash when they arrested him, we’re not sure how they got the strain. It has been referred to in movies like American Beauty and Smiley Face. In 2014, the government increased their projections for growth from 46 pounds to 1400 pounds for “medical research”. It was during Nevilles Schoenmaker (founder of Seed Bank) 83/84 collection trips to the US that he aquired, from Sandy Wienstein (who passed in 1987) the only G-13 cuttings to ever leave Sandy's garden. Neville returned to Holland and made three crosses with G-13 at the Seed Bank. G-13 x Haze (in catolog only 1 yr, discontinued. Currently Barney's Seeds), G-13 x Hash Plant (renamed: Mr. Nice.
