Romulan Joe aka Mendocino Joe (a Vietnam Vet / East Bay Biker) from Mendocino, California, and one of the founders of the Trinity Grow Scene, brought some clones to Vancouver, Canada in the 70’s. Federation Seeds (now Next Generation Seed Company) acquired the strain and planted it on Vancouver Island. They crossed it with white rhino to get the seeds and then backcrossed it 11 times backwards to achieve 97 of the original genetics. Romulan is a genetic mystery with a cross of mostly Kush (Paki/Hindu mix?) crossed with about 20-25 sativa that may be a Lemon Thai along with Columbian or Acapulco Gold. *According to Joe, the original breeders started growing weed in there backyard and greenhouse in the 50`s, after being introduced to cannabis in the Korean war and bringing home seeds to Victoria. They struggled to grow and acclimatise these seeds selecting the faster flowering shorter plants from the tall lanky Korean strain. When the late sixties and early seventies rolled around, they began trying Columbian and Mexician seeds, hybridizing varieties from these. In the mid 80`s when the Afghani strains swept into North America they briefly tried hybridizing with these but eventually when back to selecting the traits they liked in there old genetics. They worked mainly with Sativa genetics but always selected shorter squatter phenotypes which has made many people think that it is purely Indica strain. But whatever its true genealogy is, I`m sure we can all agree on its great taste and high…(thanks seedfinder.eu) There are stories of a California Blue Indica “back in the day” (if it existed…we like factual stories so if you have truths to add please send it to us). Fun Fact: In 1976 Columbian Gold was sold for $10-$15 a “lid” in California, Acapulco Gold was $20. Without the availability of scales, a “lid” was how your bag was measured and one “lid” was about equal to or more than an ounce. Weed was measured and sold “by the finger”, meaning a 4 finger lid was the most common measurement to weigh a lid but if your friend was generous it was a 5 finger lid. The bigger the hands the bigger the bag. Thai came wrapped on sticks and cost $10 each. In 1976, cigarettes were $.50, beer was $.50 and if you were a kid all you needed was a note from your parents to give to the guy at the corner store and he could sell you those items along with the candy that you walked to the store for.
